Billy Elliott was the undisputed star of last night's Tony Awards in New York - walking away with 10 awards. The British musical follows the fortunes of a coal miner's son, living in a tough northern England mining town in the 80s, who trades his boxing gloves for ballet shoes. The production scooped honours for its director, Stephen Daldry and writer, Lee Hall, as well as the three young actors who share the title role. Surprisingly, Sir Elton John, the musical's composer, missed out on the best original score award. The production's successful performance at the awards, considered to be Broadway's answer to the Oscars, brought it close to matching the record 12 awards previously won by The Producers.
