Chief oenologist Damir Risek in front of the Big Barrel of Erdut Vineyards in Erdut, Croatia on August 11, 2022. The Big Barrel of Erdut Vineyards is the largest wine barrel in use in the world. Its capacity is 75,000 liters, which is 100,000 bottles of wine. The barrel is chained with two and a half tons of shackles, decorated with Croatian wicker reliefs, as well as the Last Supper where Jesus holds a chalice of wine, and was decorated by naive sculptors Tijardovic and Fodor. It is made of 150-year-old Slavonian oak, and it was made in 1989 by DIK Djurdjenovac.
The barrel was built using the traditional method of splitting oak longs from a total of 109 oak trunks. Once a year, the barrel is emptied and filled with grasevina, which is the trademark of the Erdut vineyards. Photo: Davor Javorovic/PIXSELL
