How the lioness saved Malchus. Saint Malchus of Syria, aka Malchus of Chalcis, or Malchus of Maronia, died c. 390. After being sold into slavery and forced to marry another slave, Malchus and his wife escaped but were forced to hide in a cave as thier master was pursuing them, they received protection from God when a lioness using the cave for a den attacked and killed their pursuers, then left with her cub.
