This photograph of Virchow and friends in the pathology laboratory at the Charity Hospital, Berlin, has always been used to project an image of the physician dedicated to his work. But Virchow was a man of even greater distinction than the photo suggests. A professor at the University of Wurzburg and a director of the Pathology Institute, Berlin, he powerfully influenced nearly every branch of medicine. Virchow was an inspirational reformer as well, initiating a landmark, and widely imitated, sanitation movement in Berlin.
