Post-burn contracture scars on the neck. A contracture is a permanent tightening of skin affecting tendons and muscles under the skin which may limit mobility and possibly cause damage to the nerves. Contractures develop when inelastic fibrous tissue replaces the normal elastic connective tissues during the healing process. As a result, the tissues are resistant to stretching which prevents normal movement of the affected area.
