Snowcapped Mauna Loa volcano is the largest volcano on earth, rising to an impressive height of nearly 14,000 feet. It's a massive shield volcano and has had 38 eruptions from either its summit or flanks since 1832. The last eruption was in 1984. In the foreground is Kiauea volcano's summit caldera with Halemaumau, its summit crater and home of the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, Pele. The jagged, black ridge is from a fissure eruption that occurred in April/May 1982.
