EXCLUSIVE FEATURE BY IMPFEATURESTORIES.COM: The Great White shark has been involved in some of the most chilling attacks on South Africans and outrank all other sharks in the number of shark attacks. In April last year, 68-year-old Leopold Mairhuber of Protea Banks, KwaZulu-Natal – an experienced master scuba instructor – went missing while diving with a chartered group. Only his legs and pieces of his wetsuit were recovered. In January 2010 Lloyd Skinner, 37, of Fish Hoek, Western Cape Province, was standing in chest-deep water in False bay when a Great White bit him and dragged him under. According to witnesses, Lloyd was eaten alive in seconds. In April 2012 David Lilienfeld of Port St. John's, Eastern Cape Province, 20 was lying on his board when a fin appeared. He tried to fight off the giant beast, but it bit his leg. He was pulled ashore but by the time paramedics reached him, he had died from blood loss after his leg was severed from the hip. The Great White responsible for the attack was over 15 feet in length. Caleb Swanepoel’s name would also have been added to the above list had it not been for the bravery of his younger brother, who risked his own life to save Caleb’s. Caleb, who was 20 at the time, was on holiday at Buffelsbaai in the Western Cape when he and his two brothers decided to enter the famous surf break, not knowing that a three-metre Great White shark was lurking below. Caleb’s perfect day was about to become a nightmare. “I’ve always loved the ocean,” says Caleb. “Growing up my mom and dad would always take us to the coast for holidays and we would spend hours every day swimming in the sea. My granddad taught my brothers and I how to body surf so that was something we always used to do together. Ironically, my dad’s cousin was taken by a Great White a few years ago in Fishhoek and died but I had honestly never thought it would ever happen to me and I was never afraid of sharks.” With just two pairs of flippers b
