India has withdrawn a controversial tax on sanitary pads as a part of slew of changes to its national goods and services tax ahead of next year's general election. The July 21 announcement will reduce the prices of around 90 key consumer goods, in a move seen as targeting urban middle-class voters, and follows a vocal campaign against the 12 percent tax on sanitary pads. / AFP PHOTO / INDRANIL MUKHERJEE
