Lalibela and its stone-carved churches are the heart of Ethiopia, one of the major centers of pelegrination and the major tourist attraction of the historic route through the country. The city of Lalibela has the largest complex of churches carved in the rock of Ethiopia, built during the reign of Gebra Maskal Lalibela and declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1978.
