In this 1984 photo, Dr. Thomas Starzl is asked for autographs prior to throwing out the first pitch for a Pittsburgh Pirates game in Pittsburgh. Starzl, who pioneered liver transplant surgery in the 1960s and was a leading researcher into anti-rejection drugs, has died. He was 90.
