During World War I, Hazel Carter of Douglas, Arizona stowed away on a ship to France to stay with her soldier husband, Corporal John Carter. When her husband was to be sent overseas, she tried to join the Red Cross so she could be near him, but was not accepted. She wore an Army uniform to conceal her identity. She was discovered and sent home. She died while her husband, Corporal John Carter, was still overseas. Photo taken by International Film Service, circa 1918.
