Passengers rescued from the French Liner Sontay. The French liner Sontay bound for Marseilles from Saloniki with 344 passengers, was torpedoed on April 16, 1918 with a loss of 45 lives. The steamer sank rapidly in a heavy sea, 100 nautical miles south east of Malta by SM U-33, a German Type U 31 U-boat of the Imperial German Navy, but the prompt and methodical manner in which the small boats were launched saved the majority of those on board. Captain Mages went down with the ship.
