This illustration, made for the New York Herald and the London Sphere, shows the R.M.S. Lusitania as a second torpedo hits behind a gaping hole in the hull. The Lusitania was sunk on May 7th, 1915, by a German U-boat, killing 1,195 passengers, including 123 Americans. The sinking of the Lusitania provoked great outrage in the United States and swayed public opinion that would later allow America to join the war.
