The colophon of a copy of a treatise on chemical medicine titled Ghayat al-itqan fi tadbir badan al-insan (The Culmination of Perfection in the Treatment of the Human Body) by Ibn Sallum. According to the colophon shown on this page, the copy was completed on 2 Sha'ban 1162 (October 26th, 1749) by Sam'i Mustafa. Later owners and readers have filled the margins with recipes and therapeutic procedures. Ibn Sallum was born in Aleppo, Syria, and became court physician in Istanbul to the Ottoman ruler Mehmet IV, who ruled from 1648 to 1687. He was greatly influenced by early modern European medical theory, particularly the thought and practices of the Paracelsians, followers of Paracelsus, whose "chemical medicine" employed mineral acids, inorganic salts, and alchemical procedures in the production of compound remedies.
