Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, was a noted polymath, and is well-known for his investigations of electricity. In 1750 he published a proposal for an experiment to prove that lightning is electricity by flying a kite in a storm. He later invented the lightning rod as a result of these experiments.
