Chicago Pile-1. This drawing depicts the historic Dec. 2, 1942, event of the first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. It took place underneath the University of Chicago's Stagg Field football stadium led by a group of eminent scientists, some of whom would later found Argonne National Laboratory.
