Argentina's Diego Maradona arrives as Pope Francis attends a special audience at the Vatican on September 1, 2014 for players and organisers of a charity soccer match that was being played in Rome to promote peace and inter-religious cooperation. Pope Francis read an address to the participants in the Vatican's large audience hall and then each of them filed past the pontiff to greet and have their picture taken with him. Maradona chatted with his compatriot longer than most of the others and gave him a light blue-and-white jersey with his Argentine national team number 10 and the name Francisco on it. The charity match, which was based on a suggestion by the pope, includes active and retired players of various religions. Besides Maradona, participants at the audience in the Vatican included Italy Gianluigi Buffon , Andrea Pirlo, Roberto Baggio , Alessandro del Piero , french David Trezeguet and Argentina Javier Zanetti.
