Bismuth is diamagnetic. When a diamagnetic material is exposed to a magnetic field, it induces a weak magnetic field in the opposite direction. In this experiment a strong magnet is placed above two dome shaped samples of bismuth. A strong rare-earth magnet is place between the bismuth and is attracted to the magnet placed above. If all the magnets are adjusted to exactly the correct distances the rare-earth magnet between the bismuth samples will be levitated.
