Transmission electron micrograph of striated papillary muscle from a cat heart. The cross-banded appearance results from the ordered arrangement of actin and myosin filaments. The darker A bands are of constant length corresponding to the length of the myosin filaments. The lighter I band consisting of actin filaments is bisected by the dense Z line, where the actin filaments are joined laterally.
