Gertrude Goldhaber (1911-1998). German/US atomic physicist. She left her native Germany in 1935, and worked at Imperial College, London, UK, until 1939. She then moved to the University of Illinois, USA. In 1942, she discovered that uranium emitted neutrons during fission. The US government deemed the work classified, so it was not published until 1946. With her husband Maurice she showed that beta radiation was made up of electrons. Photographed in 1979 at the History of Physics Symposium at the University of Minnesota.
