In this photograph taken on March 3, 2013, a villager lights up a bonfire to stop wild elephants from entering a private palm oil plantation in East Aceh district bordering forests of Aceh province. Increasing human and animal conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 17 elephants in 2012 mostly from suspected poisoning according to Indonesian wildlife authorities. Classified as critically endangered, fewer than 3,000 Sumatran elephants remain in the wild, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, a 50 percent drop in numbers since 1985. The race to protect the world's rhino, elephant and shark populations from the bloody trade in animal body parts will be at the heart of key endangered species talks in Bangkok from March 3 to 14, 2013.
