The Weighing of the Heart. A papyrus showing Princess Entiu-ny from the Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead. The spells forming the Book of the Dead were once painted inside the tomb, but in the New Kingdom they were inscribed on a papyrus roll and buried with the mummy. This scene takes place in the the Hall of Osiris, with Osiris on his throne at left. The jackal-headed Anubis, who is in charge of the scales, weighs the heart of Entiu-ny against a figure symbolizing truth, while she (second from right) holds out to him the hieroglyphics of eyes and mouth. Behind the princess in her diaphanous gown stands Isis, sister of Osiris. Osiris, from his throne, says to Anubis: "Take her eyes and her mouth into thy charge, if her heart is righteous," at which Anubis, turning his head, replies: "Her heart is righteous."
