The V&A’s Royal Photographic Society Collection © Victoria and Albert Museum, London Bromide print. Photograph by Horace W Nicholls (1867-1941). This photograph is also known as 'The latest portrait of Lord Roberts and his faithful Indian servant'. Field Marshall Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, was a distinguished British soldier considered to be amongst the most successful commanders of the Victorian era. He is one of only two non-Royals to have had the honour of lying in state in Westminster Hall during the 20th century (Winston Churchill was the other one). He is buried in St Paul??s Cathedral, London.
