Manadatory Credit: Photo by NASA / Rex Features (1437756C) Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (artist's impression) NASA Satellite to fall back to Earth A 6.5-ton satellite is expected to fall back to Earth - and NASA admit they have no idea where it will land. The space agency have announced the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere in an uncontrolled fall in late September or early October. And while much of the spacecraft is expected to burn up during re-entry, some pieces are expected to make it intact to the ground. It is impossible to pinpoint just where in that zone the debris will land, but NASA estimates the debris footprint will be about 500 miles long. A NASA statement says:"Although the spacecraft will break into pieces during re-entry, not all of it will burn up in the atmosphere. "It is too early to say exactly when UARS will re-enter and what geographic area may be affected, but NASA is watching the satellite closely and will keep you informed. "The actual date of re-entry is difficult to predict because it depends on solar flux and the spacecraft's orientation as its orbit decays. As re-entry draws closer, predictions on the date will become more reliable." NASA plans to post updates weekly until about four days before the anticipated re-entry. They will then share daily updates until about 24 hours before re-entry, when it will begin even more frequent postings. The agency helpfully add: "If you find something you think may be a piece of UARS, do not touch it. Contact a local law enforcement official for assistance." UARS was launched Sept. 12, 1991, aboard space shuttle mission STS-48 and deployed on Sept. 15, 1991. It was the first multi-instrumented satellite to observe numerous chemical components of the atmosphere for better understanding of photochemistry. The satellite also provided key d...
