La Montaña de Hierro: Complejo Minero de Aizpea, The Iron Mountain: Aizpea Mining Complex, Zerain, Goierri, Basque Country, Euskadi Spain. The heart of the Goierri region is made of metal and is located in the 150 hectares that make up the Aizpea mines, better known as the Iron Mountain. From the 11th century, when the first references to these mines date, until 1951, when the furnaces stopped working, iron and Zerain have been united. Today, in this place, you can see the remains of what was a very important industry for the area. A place that has achieved the designation of Monumental Ensemble from the Department of Culture of the Basque Government and, as if that were not enough, is located within the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park. Underground galleries, inclined planes, locomotive rails and a transformation workshop, among other vestiges, remain as a reminder of what was a very important industry in the area. In the modern exhibition rooms of the Aizpitta Interpretation Center, the visitor will learn about the history and industrialization process of the mineral. (Sergi Reboredo / VWPics via AP Images)
