Holocaust survivor Erich Finsches, 97, poses in Vienna, Austria, on December 13, 2024. Erich Richard Finsches was born on September 11, 1927 in Vienna. He fled to Budapest to be with relatives before being deported by rail from Budapest to the Auschwitz concentration camp at the end of April 1944, when he was about 16 years old. He was then transported from Auschwitz to the Muehldorf concentration camp complex, a subcamp of the Dachau concentration camp, probably around September 1944. Around early April 1945, Finsches was then transported from the Muehldorf camp to the Kaufering concentration camp, also part of the 11 subcamps of the Dachau concentration camp system, which was liberated by the Americans on April 27, 1945. Finsches was 17 years old at the time and weighed only 27 kilogrammes. Today Finsches lives with his partner in Vienna and has three children, but barely has any contact with them.
