A common sight in much of Peninsular Malaysia: a seemingly endless expanse of monoculture oil palm plantations. Although this land will not be affected by the new EUDR regulations, which requires that no deforestation occurred after 2020 for palm oil, rubber, coffee, cacao, soy and some other cash crops, this land, some of it peat forest, was clear cut decades ago. The EUDR cannot erase the environmental destruction of the past but it lays down a marker for future deforestation.
