A British diver-sculptor has placed 30 sculptures underwater to highlight the effects of climate change. For nearly 20 years, sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor has been creating evocative underwater installations that speak to the environmental hardships our seas face. His latest installation, A World Adrift, continues his work in Grenada by sinking 30 boat sculptures in the waters off the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Located just four meters beneath the surface, A World Adrift is a short boat trip from Hillsborough in Carriacou, making it accessible to snorkelers and divers. The installation comprises 30 sculpted boats, each navigated by figures representing local schoolchildren. The delicate-looking “origami” boats are crafted from durable materials, providing a safe haven for fish and coral as artificial reefs. Beyond their symbolism, they’re designed to foster marine life, with the rigging acting as a nursery for coral and sponge species that are struggling after recent storms. Marked with global temperature data, the sails highlight the rising temperatures affecting our planet. For Carriacou and Petite Martinique, the project carries a particularly personal message. Known for their natural beauty, these islands also bear the weight of increasing climate threats. This reality hit especially hard in July 2024 when Hurricane Beryl, a powerful Category 5 storm, left lasting damage, underscoring the need for urgent action.
