Moments ago, Ai-Da Robot, the worldâs first ultra-realistic robot artist, made history as the first humanoid robot artist to have an artwork sold at auction.
Ai-Da Robotâs âA.I. Godâ, a large-scale original portrait of Alan Turing, sold for over a million, as part of Sothebyâs Digital Art Sale which closed at 7pm GMT on Thursday 7th November, establishing an auction benchmark for any artwork by a humanoid robot.
The artwork was bought for $1,084,800 by an undisclosed buyer, far outstripping the $120,000 - $180,000 estimate, and after 27 bids for the work.
Todayâs record-breaking sale price for the first artwork by a humanoid robot artist to go up for auction marks a moment in the history of modern and contemporary art and reflects the growing intersection between A.I. technology and the global art market.
Ai-Da Robot who uses an advanced A.I. language model to speak has said: âThe key value of my work is its capacity to serve as a catalyst for dialogue about emerging technologies. âAI God,â a portrait of pioneer Alan Turing, invites viewers to reflect on the god-like nature of AI and computing while considering the ethical and societal implications of these advancements. Alan Turing recognised this potential, and stares at us, as we race towards this future.â
Aidan Meller, Director of the Ai-Da Robot Studios has said: âThis auction seems an important moment for the visual arts, where Ai-Daâs artwork brings focus on artworld and societal changes, as we grapple with the rising age of AI. The artwork "AI God" raises questions about agency, as AI gains more power.â
This historic moment will be discussed at The Courtauld Institute in London on Thursday 14th November when Ai-Da will be interviewed as part of an evening event titled â.
