Barry's clear burger next to McDonald's Big Mac burger. SOMERSET, UK: THIS could be the FIRST ever CLEAR burger based entirely on the McDonald’s Big Mac. The video shows content creator Barry Lewis taking each element of the Big Mac burger and making a clear version using gelatine and other ingredients to develop a completely see-through edible burger. Barry Lewis (42) began his experimental YouTube cooking career in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, where he lives with his wife Rebecca (39) and their two children Phoebe (16) and Chloe (12). This cooking journey began on YouTube 10 years ago when Barry, for the first time in his life, poached an egg. His channel and curiosity for food has gone from strength to strength over the last decade, leading him to ponder if clear food could be made. The first successful clear food item was a lemon meringue pie. This led to a clear food series on YouTube culminating in the ultimate clear food challenge, making a clear Big Mac. Barry posted the clear Big Mac creation video on his social media channels. He received over 7.8M views, 586K likes on TikTok with more than 3K comments. In addition to TikTok, he received 427K views on his YouTube video. “I was inspired to make a clear Big Mac when I walked past McDonald’s one day and wondered if it was even possible,” said Barry. “I had been making a clear food series on my YouTube channel and thought it would be an interesting challenge. “I created the clear food series because it is playing with food in every sense. “I thought of experimenting with the concept of clear food when I saw the clear fizzy drinks called Pepsi Crystal and Coca Cola’s TaB. “I wondered how they made that clear and wanted to try it too. Barry shared that his family and friends haven't tried his clear creations and that he wouldn’t want them to. "I think I wouldn't let them and feel comfortable letting them eat the clear food I make on the channel, it doesn’t taste great,” joked Barry. “My wife was relieved that the burger bun worked since I’d been trying to make it work for a while, but it's not something she would eat.” Barry has even gone so far as to refuse to share his recipe on Instagram so others do not have to be put through eating the burger which he described as “horrible” and “purely entertainment”. “I’ve done a few clear recipes over the years, but this attempt at a clear Big Mac was clearly the hardest,” wrote Barry. “Everything was made clear and flavoured as closely as possible even down to the gherkins, onions and lettuce. “It smelled and tasted like a Big Mac, but had the texture of a McDonalds credit card covered in jelly. “I’m not typing the recipe up, it was horrible and purely entertainment with a big chunk of luck at the end. “One thing that does clear my conscience, is that the bun despite looking like a jellyfish looks more like a bun than the proper one. “This was playing with my food in every sense.” Barry shared the most shocking elements of creating the burger. “The most shocking thing when making the burger was that the burger bun worked,” said Barry. “This is because I had to keep cooking it to create layers, and add sesame seed oil at the end when I put it in the oven, which I was worried would cause it to disintegrate, but luckily it didn’t. “I was surprised that the gherkin actually tasted the best out of all the elements. Barry posted the video on TikTok with the caption “Yes, this is a transparent (or my best attempt at) homemade McDonald’s Big Mac.” “Enjoy, this was one of the toughest things and most nervous I’ve ever been in a video, you’ll probably know which part I mean too when you get to it.” The video received a big reaction from shocked and curious viewers, with some comparing it to a jellyfish. “What does the other 45% taste of though?!?”, asked a commenter. “One of those stung me in the sea last year,” said Leea. “Let me be clear, that looks cool,” said Brad.
