An elusive black and white kingfisher makes a big splash as it goes fishing in a river. The pied kingfisher was eventually snapped hunting for lunch in Hong Kong.
Photographer Mark Yeung said, “I had to hide using a camouflage tent to wait for the kingfishers to come nearby. I sat inside under the sun at 32 degrees celcius from 6am until 5pm to get these photos.”
"I first spotted this one hovering like it was frozen for around five seconds as it targeted its prey. Suddenly it started diving very quickly into the river, catching fish.”
“Sometimes, if you are lucky, they may come one to three times in a whole day. And even when they come, you have a few second to spot them and follow their trajectory. They can fly at speeds as fast as 30mph.”
“All I could think after getting the photos was ‘oh my god, I did it!’.”
