Cheetahs at Cincinnati Zoo have had three unusual best friends for the past eight years - a trio of dogs who act as surrogate siblings. Now the cheetah companion dogs, Moose, Remus, and Daisy, having earned a well-deserved retirement. These loyal canines have been essential in helping cheetah cubs grow and adapt, acting as surrogate siblings during their early years. Each dog was paired with a cheetah cub of a similar age, with the pair being raised together to ensure a smooth transition for the cheetahs as they matured. As cheetahs naturally become solitary around the age of two, the need for their canine companions lessens, with the animals preferring their own company. While some dogs continued to play with their cheetah friends past this point, the interactions naturally became less frequent as the cheetahs aged. This year, the three dogs will be adopted by members of the zoo’s staff, where they will enjoy the peaceful life of a household pet. Moose was paired with Donni, a solo cheetah cub from Oregon’s Wildlife Safari. They developed a close bond, with Moose staying on even after Donni became independent due to his intelligence and ability to engage with the public. Remus, adopted from a local shelter, immediately became a fan favourite with his playful personality. Remus also showed an interest in playing with other cheetahs, making him an invaluable member of the team. His favourite pastime now is going for walks around the zoo, much to the delight of visitors. Daisy was brought in as a companion for Rozi, the zoo’s newest cheetah ambassador. With her energetic and playful personality, Daisy excelled at engaging with both staff and visitors. Her high-flying frisbee routine became a highlight of the zoo’s cheetah encounters. Quick to learn and always eager to please, Daisy’s presence will be greatly missed. As these wonderful dogs retire, they leave behind a legacy of joy, love, and companionship that will not be forgotten at the Cincinnati Zoo.
