ROLLY-POLLY-BEAR.... This playful polar bear enjoys a break from the harsh realities of the Arctic as it rolls around on grass as another watches on. The pair of polar bears were spotted enjoying the snow free contitions in Longyearbyen in the Norweigan archipelago of Svalbard. Eye surgeon Somdutt Prasad said, “Polar bears often roll around on the ground to help get rid of insects and parasites. The dirt they pick up while rolling can also act as a shield against pests.” “Another reason for this behaviour could be to leave their scent to mark territory. This helps them to communicate with other polar bears in the region. It is fascinating how such a simple action can serve multiple purposes.” Please byline: Somdutt Prasad/Solent News © Somdutt Prasad/Solent News & Photo Agency UK +44 (0) 2380 458800 *** Local Caption *** The answers to your queries are below: When and where were these shots taken? The papers often ask for specific dates and locations and we would need to be able to provide this information upon request. Both the sets are from trips I took from Longyearbyen to the north of Svalbard. The first set (with bears on ice and mother andd cub on the pack Ice) were taken in late June 2024 and the first few days of July. This was arround 80 degrees north latitude. The second set, with the bears mosty on land are a bit older, taken in the ame area in August 2022. The fact taht there was so little snow/ice in August is also a testimony to melting of Arctic ice due to weather change. Can you describe what is happening in these images? The first set mainly shows a polar bear mother and cub frolicking on the pack ice, with thier tender interaction. Also, A pod of Beluga whales put in an appearence and the Bears watched them curiously, what a sight! The second set shows Polar bears in various activities on some of the islands towards the North of Svalbard Can you give us an insight into the moments leading up to this as well as directly after? How were you able to capture these images? I was on a small ship, the M S Origo. I have attached a write up which I did for my local camera club, which will give you a lot of detail. This is about the first sert of images. The second est was on the same ship two years ago, but off course the landscape and scenario were different, but it was asimilar trip. Is there any more information you would like us to include? And finally, what is your preferred full name, age and occupation? Somdutt Prasad 59 Years I am a doctor, a practicisng ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) with a special interest in retinal diseases based in Kolkata, India.
