SWAMPY SQUABBLE! A mother lashes out at an angry male as she protects her calf, causing mud to spray up during their boggy battle. The angry pair were spotted along the muddy banks of the Chobe River, Botswana.
Lisa Di Leo said, “The female was protecting her calf from a large, rather unhappy male. He tried to get to the youngster from all sides.”
“A lot of speculation resolved to the possibility that the younger hippo was getting too close to the young females, and maybe a bit too eager, when the large male started driving him away. I was at eye level with them and about 40-50 meters from the show. It was quite intimidating yet exhilarating!”

6th Feb 2024: early morning - on the Chobe river, Botswana, we were excited for every experience the day held in promise. Shortly after our Pangolin guide started the joy for the day, we heard a load rumble of sounds in the distance.
Adrenalin rose, excitement climbed, and we were assured this is a rival between Hippos. Our experienced guide wasted no time in getting us up the river, following the sound - and bringing us to more than an hour of sheer experience/
In awe, we witnessed a female, protecting her young (we called him Junior) from a large, rather unhappy male. He tried to get to Junior from all sides (you can notice him peeing behind the safety of mom).
A lot of speculation resolved to the possibility that Junior was getting too close to the young females, and maybe a bit too eager - when the large male started driving him away.
We were at eye-level about 40-50 meters from the show - quite intimidating, yet exhilarating! We were indeed privileged to have witnessed such a natural, adrenalin-pumping experience.
Their argument went on for a long time, in gratitude for having been there, we left them, lingering in their sound for a while still, as we moved up the river. Junior was safe.
