A legendary engine that powered Spitfire planes during WWII is heading to auction. The renowned Merlin engine is eternally linked with the iconic aircraft it propelled so effectively, including the Spitfire, Hurricane, Mustang, Lancaster, and Mosquito of WWII. While most were used in aircraft, the 27-litre V12 engine was also adapted for tanks and Motor Torpedo Boats (MTBs). The meticulously crafted Rolls-Royce Merlin engine left the Hillingdon factory near Glasgow in 1949. Post-war, Merlin engines were integrated into nearly 40 different aircraft applications. This specific engine was likely intended for the Canadair Northstar and the Argonaut. Acquired in 2017 for museum display by a company called Flying Enterprise, owned by a Danish millionaire, it has a fascinating history. Flight Engineering of Leeds, specialists in Merlin engines, undertook a two-year rebuild of the engine. It's believed the engine was "inhibited" after an inspection, covered with a grease-like fluid to prevent corrosion, preserving it for almost 50 years. Today, it appears almost factory-fresh despite being nearly 75 years old. Mounted on a custom Brian James trailer with a control panel for operation, the 'ground-runner' Merlin engine can also be displayed independently thanks to its integral frame. It includes a Hamilton propeller and a comprehensive set of manuals from Rolls-Royce Derby, along with information from Flight Engineering, starting and running instructions, and even a Haynes manual. The engineering marvel, capable of producing a conservative 1,660bhp at 17,500 feet, is an impressive sight at ground level when running. The Merlin engine is one of the most successful powerplants of the WWII era, with its output rapidly increasing from around 1,000 bhp to over 2,000 bhp. By the end of its production in 1950, almost 170,000 units had been manufactured. The fortunate buyer will join distinguished company, including serial car collector Jay Leno, who owns a similar setup and enjoys revving the engine to move the trailer and tow vehicle. The beautifully restored Rolls-Royce Merlin 'ground runner' engine, complete with comprehensive starting instructions, will be auctioned by Iconic Auctioneers at the Silverstone Festival on August 24th, estimated at £40,000 - £50,000. Part of the 14th sale for Iconic Auctioneers (formerly Silverstone Auctions), this Merlin engine will be a highlight at the Silverstone Festival, an event attracting some 70,000 visitors and one of the biggest historic motorsport weekends of the year.
