22-year-old singer-songwriter Nya Marquez from Dallas-Fort Worth felt fit and healthy when she noticed a painless lump on her neck in January this year. Little did she know the small bump that seemed to appear out of nowhere would lead to a life-changing diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer that starts in the lymphatic system. "The moment when I got diagnosed was super shocking. I was just in disbelief that I had cancer. I immediately had to walk out of the consultation room and broke down in tears," Nya recalled "For a few weeks after my diagnosis, I grappled with whether to share my cancer journey publicly. Initially, I had decided to remain silent until I was cancer-free. But then I realised that by opening up, I could potentially help others going through the same overwhelming emotions – the sadness, confusion, and fears." Nya's journey to becoming a rising pop sensation has been years in the making. At just three years old, she knew she wanted to be a performer, inspired by the glitz and glamour of Disney and Nickelodeon stars. After dedicating herself to vocal lessons and honing her craft, Nya's hard work paid off when she caught the attention of industry legends like AB Quintanilla, the multi-Grammy winner brother of late Latin icon Selena. Quintanilla produced Nya's first full English album, recognising her unique sound and gifted dancing abilities that draw influence from decades of top pop artists. Over the past three years, Nya has tirelessly toured and performed countless school concerts, using her powerful voice and social media platforms to raise awareness about bullying, mental health, teen gun violence, and suicide prevention. Her single and video Still Standing from the album Crush tackle these topics head-on. "Before my diagnosis, I was heavily involved in spreading awareness about topics relating to teens I felt particularly passionate about. Now I've added cancer to my list," she shared. "As young people, we have this invincible mentality - we think our bodies will never fail us. We don't prioritise our health because we feel unstoppable. But my cancer diagnosis was a rude awakening. I was healthy and active, yet there I was, facing a life-threatening illness. My story is a wake-up call for all young people - your health is precious. Don't take your body for granted. Get regular check-ups, listen to the warning signs, and make conscious choices to nurture your well-being daily through diet, exercise, and self-care. You have one life, one body - treat it with the respect it deserves. Because as I've learned the hard way, cancer can strike anyone at any age without discrimination." She continued: "While I've always felt confident producing music, sometimes I would be scared to put things out. But cancer has shown me I need to share my art fearlessly. Cancer has taught me to live in every moment and not care what people think. Just do what you love because you never know when your life will change." Nya is currently undergoing an intensive chemotherapy regimen called ABVD, having completed five rounds so far with 7 more to go. "The chemo makes you feel bad – I can't lie about that. Losing my hair at such a young age, feeling constantly exhausted for days after chemo, being out of breath, and experiencing relentless nausea has been awful," she noted. "It's tough mentally, too, with so many thoughts going through your mind. I'm managing it as best I can. I have faith in God, and He is the one who will heal me through this process. He keeps me going. When I feel drained, I remind myself that I will feel better in a few days, motivating me to keep going." Nya finds solace in songwriting, the support of her online followers, and the love of her family and friends. "Songwriting always gets my mind off everything, and I can forget I'm a sick girl for a while. Music has taken on even greater meaning, providing me with an outlet to process my experiences. With my music, I've found a whole different, real me. It's honestly easier to write now, knowing that I've gone through one of the hardest things in my life. It makes me so excited to become cancer-free so I can show what I'm really here for," she asserted. "Social media has been an invaluable lifeline, connecting me with a supportive community. The outpouring of love and encouragement from fans has helped me stay hopeful even on the darkest days. More than anything, this experience has taught me the importance of family and revealed my true friends. When battling cancer, fair-weather friends fall away, while real ones rally around you. Genuine human connections are vital. Material possessions, fame, and success pale in comparison to the healing power of family and friends. Cancer strips away the superficial and reveals what truly matters in life." As she continues her treatment, Nya dreams of the day she'll be cancer-free and can pursue her musical ambitions wholeheartedly. "Once I'm cancer-free, I'm going to work so hard on my music and make that dream a reality. I have found inspiration in unlikely places, like Ariana Grande's song We Can’t Be Friends. That song came out as more of a relationship type of song, but I felt it more as a relationship towards my cancer – saying that I can't be friends with my cancer, but we can pretend to be friends. We're not friends." To others newly diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, she offered this advice: "The beginning is hard, but once you're through the diagnosis loop and all the surgeries and biopsies, you're ready to fight for your life. You know within yourself that you can do it because you are strong and brave."
