This photograph, taken on May 6, 2024, shows Kirumba, one of the last towns before the front line between the Congolese army and the M23 rebellion, supported by the Rwandan army, in the south of Lubero territory, North Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Twenty kilometers to the south begins the zone occupied by the rebels and the soldiers of the Rwanda Defense Force (RDF), where they have set up a parallel administration. Since late 2021, they have seized large swathes of North Kivu province and routed the Congolese army. The United States and France are urging Rwanda President Paul Kagame to withdraw his troops from Congolese soil, including the surface-to-air missile systems. (Photo by ALEXIS HUGUET / AFP)
