This photograph taken on September 21, 2023 shows laying hens in pens at the Jardibocage organic breeding center in Menomblet, western France. In French hatcheries, hatchings of male chicks, incapable of laying eggs like their "sisters", are becoming rarer, a technological and ethical advance: they were previously crushed. Hatcheries are now investing in sexing technology helping them to identify the sex of eggs, allowing them to incubate the female embryos and discard the male ones.
