Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) in Earth orbit, illustration. The CXO is the most powerful X-ray telescope ever built. It observes X-rays from high-energy regions in space, such as hot gas in the remnants of exploded stars. It was launched by NASA in 1999 with an expected lifetime of 5 years. As of 2023, it is still operating and expected to continue for many more years.
