A member of the DC Guardian Angels watches as the train pulls away from the Potomac Avenue Metro Station in Washington, DC, on March 31, 2023. Following the second shooting in two months at the Potomac Avenue Metro Station, members of the DC Guardian Angels patrolled the station in an attempt to deter further crimes from occurring. The Guardian Angels originated in New York City in the 1970’s and came to Washington, DC, in 1989, with chapters in major cities across the United States. The DC chapter is comprised of a group of volunteers, age 16 and older, who patrol the DC subways on evenings and weekends. They do not work for the police, though they work with them in more serious cases, or in situations they are unable to de-escalate. They do this work unpaid in an attempt to help the community.
