Illustration of healthy (left) and osteoporotic (right) cancellous bone tissue. Cancellous, or spongy, bone is found in the interior of a bone. It is characterised by a honeycomb arrangement, comprising a network of trabeculae (white). These structures provide support and strength to the bone. The spaces within this tissue contain bone marrow (not seen), a blood forming substance. Osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) causes a reduction in overall bone mass and an increase in the bone's porosity, making it more brittle and likely to fracture. It commonly affects the elderly and post-menopausal women, who experience a decrease in levels of the hormone oestrogen.
