Healthy brain, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. The front of the head is at top. This is a view at the level of the eyes (dark areas at top). At upper centre is the optical chiasma where the optic nerves from each eye cross each other. At lower centre is the top of the cerebellum, which controls balance, posture and muscle coordination. The majority of the brain is composed of the cerebrum, which is responsible for conscious thought, emotion and voluntary movement. For a series of slices through this brain see F036/5751 to F036/5762.
